When participating in marriage counseling or couples counseling, the
therapists at Coastal Counseling ask that both partners are present for all
sessions. This is important in marriage counseling as it shows a commitment
by both parties to work on improving their marriage or relationship.
In certain circumstances a person may benefit from individual therapy before
entering into marriage counseling and then the couple can meet with a
marriage counselor when the time is right. This way the marriage therapist is
able to assess the couple together and the process remains neutral and
unbiased .
The therapists do not take sides on issues or concerns. The goal is to
understand both partners opinions and work together toward resolution. The
counseling is solution focused and often spaced out over time.
Unfortunately, avoiding conflicts does not make them go away. Making an
