Sound Parenting
Sound Parenting is a parenting program developed at Coastal Counseling Associates to support separating
and divorcing parents in Connecticut. It addresses the needs of children through educating parents, and
helping to create parenting plans during this major life transition. Separation or divorce puts major stress on
all of the individuals  involved, particularly the children. The mission of
Sound Parenting is to effectively
increase cooperation, and collaboration in the co-parenting relationship, using mediation to resolve parenting
conflicts or disputes, and improve parents ability to communicate during this time of transition.
Sound Parenting counselors work to enrich parents' awareness of the children's needs. Parenting plans are
drafted, and parents work together to implement the plans. While the focus is on the children, parent
coordinators do not meet with children individually. There are no clinical analysis or therapy used when
developing plans. The parent coordinator may refer children to a child specialist for therapy surrounding
adjustment issues in divorce, if there is a need. Parents control decisions for their children based upon
everyone's needs.
Sound Parenting is structured, with a clear focus, and is solution oriented.
The parent coordinators at Coastal Counseling Associates have
been trained in the methods of divorce recovery, conflict resolution,
mediation, collaborative divorce, co-parenting training, and are
licensed psychotherapists. The parent coordinators have studied
family systems, as well as trained in human development, and
behavioral interventions. They have worked with high conflict
families and couples going through separation or divorce.
